Find GroomersScottish Folds are immediately recognizable — those adorable folded ears give them an owl-like expression that cat lovers can't resist. But those signature ears aren't just cute. They're a grooming priority that many owners overlook.
The folded ear anatomy creates a warm, enclosed space that traps wax, moisture, and debris far more than upright-eared cats. Without regular attention, Scottish Folds are prone to ear infections that are entirely preventable.
On a normal cat, the upright ear canal is exposed to air circulation. Wax dries naturally, debris falls out, and moisture evaporates. Self-cleaning, more or less.
On a Scottish Fold, the ear cartilage folds forward and down, creating a covered pocket. Air can't circulate freely. Wax accumulates. Moisture gets trapped. Bacteria and yeast have a warm, dark, damp environment to thrive in.
This doesn't mean your Scottish Fold will definitely get ear infections. It means you need to check and clean their ears regularly — it's the single most important grooming task for this breed.
How often: Check weekly. Clean as needed — for most Scottish Folds, that's every 1-2 weeks.

What to look for:
If you see concerning signs, see your vet. Ear infections in Scottish Folds can become chronic if not treated properly.

Regardless of coat length, the ears are always the priority.

This is important and breed-specific: Scottish Folds have a known predisposition to osteochondrodysplasia — a condition affecting cartilage and bone development. Even healthy Scottish Folds may have some degree of joint stiffness, especially in the tail, ankles, and knees.
During grooming:
If you notice stiffness, limping, or reluctance to jump, mention it to your vet. Joint issues in Scottish Folds can progress and affect quality of life.
