The Breeds With Some Real Evidence — and the Honest Caveats
A handful of breeds come up repeatedly in the hypoallergenic conversation. Here's what's actually behind each claim.
Siberian. This is the breed with the most legitimate research attention. A 2014 study published in Clinical and Translational Allergy looked specifically at Fel d 1-related genetics in Siberian cats compared to non-Siberian cats and found genetic differences that could plausibly affect how much of the allergen a Siberian produces. The researchers were careful to note something important: there's wide overlap between "hypoallergenic" breeds and regular cats, and no breed tested was allergen-free. Russian Blue. Frequently cited by owners and breeders as producing less Fel d 1. Like the Balinese, this rests more on accumulated anecdotal reporting than on a dedicated peer-reviewed study — plausible, not proven.
Bengal. The allergy-friendly reputation here is mostly about coat, not protein output — a pelt-like coat that sheds less means less loose hair carrying allergens around your house, not necessarily less Fel d 1 at the source.
Devon Rex and Cornish Rex. Same story as the Bengal — no strong evidence of reduced Fel d 1 production, but a fine, low-shedding coat that spreads less dander around a house.
Sphynx. This is the one that surprises people. A hairless cat sounds like the obvious allergy solution, and it's the one breed where that logic is most often wrong. Fel d 1 comes from skin and saliva, not fur — and without a coat to catch and hold shed dander until a brushing session removes it, a Sphynx can spread allergens onto skin, furniture, and hands just as readily as a coated cat. Sphynx cats also need more frequent bathing than coated breeds because there's no fur to absorb the skin's natural oils, which cuts the other way on exposure. Why Coat Length Matters Less Than People Think
This trips up almost everyone starting this search: coat length and allergy risk aren't the same axis. A long-haired cat with a coat that traps shed fur and dander until it's brushed out can, in practice, distribute less loose allergen around a house day to day than a short-haired cat that's constantly shedding fine hair everywhere. Meanwhile a completely hairless cat can be worse for some allergy sufferers than a fluffy one, for the reasons above.

None of this means allergy sufferers are stuck choosing between misery and no cat. A few things make a real, measurable difference:
Brush your cat regularly, and do it somewhere ventilated. The ASPCA specifically recommends brushing or combing pets frequently, preferably outdoors — it physically removes allergen-carrying dander and loose hair before it spreads through your home instead of after.
Have someone else handle the cleaning tasks where possible. Litter box maintenance and vacuuming stir up settled allergens. If you live with someone who isn't allergic, that's the person for those jobs; if not, a mask during cleaning helps.
Keep one allergen-light room. The ASPCA's advice here is specific: designate a room — usually the bedroom — as off-limits to the cat, so you get a consistent stretch of lower-exposure hours every day. Eight hours of reduced exposure overnight adds up.
Limit soft surfaces where allergens collect. Heavy drapes, rugs, and upholstered furniture hold dander longer than hard surfaces. This doesn't mean stripping your home bare — it means being aware of where allergens accumulate and cleaning those surfaces more often.
Wash your hands after handling your cat, and before touching your face. Simple, unglamorous, and it works.
