Norwegian Forest Cat Grooming Guide
A Viking's cat with a waterproof coat
Norwegian Forest Cats (Wegies) are one of nature's best-designed cold-weather cats. Their thick, water-resistant double coat evolved to survive Scandinavian winters and is remarkably self-maintaining for a long-haired breed. While they shed heavily during spring coat blow, their coat texture resists matting better than Persians, making them a manageable long-haired grooming client.
Grooming Overview
Despite their impressive coat length, Norwegian Forest Cats are surprisingly manageable for a long-haired breed. Their coarser, water-resistant coat texture naturally resists the severe matting that plagues Persians and Himalayans. Regular brushing 2-3 times per week keeps the coat in excellent condition.
The main grooming challenge comes during the spring coat blow when Wegies shed their dense winter undercoat dramatically. During this period (usually March through May), daily brushing and professional deshedding treatments are highly recommended. The amount of loose undercoat that comes out during a professional deshedding session is remarkable.
Professional grooming includes a thorough bath (which requires patience, as the water-resistant coat takes longer to saturate), blow-dry, deshedding, sanitary trimming around the rear area, and nail care. The paw tufts should also be trimmed to prevent litter tracking and slip hazards on hard floors.
Coat Characteristics
The Norwegian Forest Cat coat features a water-resistant, glossy outer layer over a dense, woolly undercoat. The coat changes dramatically between seasons — thick and full in winter, shorter and lighter in summer. The chest ruff, leg britches, and bushy tail are the longest sections. Unlike the cottony Persian coat, the Wegie coat has a coarser, oilier texture that naturally resists tangling.
