Everyone gets the gift wrong
Search "International Cat Day" and you'll find the standard playbook: a new toy, a treat, maybe a cardboard box with a bow taped to it as a joke that's somehow not a joke because the cat will genuinely prefer the box. All fine. None of it addresses the thing your cat has actually been dealing with for six weeks straight: a coat that's been shedding through the hottest, muggiest stretch of the year and quietly working itself into trouble in the spots you don't check.
The unglamorous truth is that the best thing you can do for a cat on their day is the thing that's easy to keep putting off — running your hands over the coat and dealing with what you find.
The two-minute version
You don't need a whole grooming overhaul to mark the occasion. Work your fingers — not just a brush — through the usual trouble spots: behind the ears, under the front legs, around the collar, along the belly. Loose fur that moves freely is still a brushing problem, easy and quick. Anything that resists your fingers, that's felted into a stuck little patch, has crossed into mat territory, and that's not a five-minute fix anymore.
Late summer is exactly when this catches people off guard. Weeks of heat and shedding add up quietly, and a coat that seemed fine at the start of the season can be well ahead of you by August. A cat day check-in is as good an excuse as any to catch it before it gets there.
The actual gift
If the coat's still in loose-fur territory, a solid brushing session is a genuinely good way to spend five minutes of the day together — most cats will tolerate more affection than usual when there's a brush involved. If it's already past that, skip the DIY heroics. A professional groomer can clear out weeks of built-up undercoat and matting in one visit, which is a far better present than anything with a bow on it.
