Back-to-School Season Is About to Steal Your Cat's Brushing Time

Somewhere in your house right now, there's a list. School supplies, new shoes, a schedule of who's picking up whom on which afternoon. Your cat's coat is not on it, and your cat's coat knows.

The habit that goes first

Brushing a cat is one of those small, steady household routines — easy to keep up when summer is slow, easy to skip when everyone's suddenly juggling drop-offs, homework, and the first sports practice of the season. It's rarely a decision to stop. It's just the first thing that quietly doesn't happen on a Tuesday, and then doesn't happen the Tuesday after that.

The cat, notably, keeps shedding on the same schedule regardless of anyone's calendar. Loose fur doesn't pause for the first week of school. It just accumulates a little longer between brushes than it used to.

Why a short gap turns into a real problem

A few skipped sessions on their own aren't a crisis. The issue is that loose undercoat left in place doesn't just sit there politely — it works itself into tangles at the usual trouble spots (behind the ears, under the legs, around the collar) faster the longer it's ignored, especially on a cat who's still shedding from the last stretch of summer. What would've been a two-minute brush-out in July can turn into an actual mat by the time things calm down in October.

Make it survive the chaos

The fix isn't a longer grooming routine — it's a sturdier one. A couple of ideas that hold up better once the schedule gets unpredictable:

  • Tie it to something that already happens daily. Right after you feed the cat, right before you leave for the school run — a brush that's attached to an existing habit is far more likely to survive a hectic week than one that depends on remembering.
  • Go short, not thorough. A focused sixty-second pass over the usual trouble spots most days beats an ambitious ten-minute session you keep meaning to get to and never do.
  • Book the reset now, while the calendar still has room. A professional deshedding session clears out the coat your cat's been building up all summer, so you're starting the school year from a clean baseline instead of playing catch-up in week three.

If it's already slipped

If you're reading this because the brush has genuinely been sitting untouched since June, run your hands over the usual spots before you commit to a plan. Loose fur is still a brushing problem. Anything that resists your fingers has crossed into mat territory, and that's a job for a professional, not a rushed five minutes before carpool.

Either way, this is the easiest week of the next several months to get ahead of it. Find a cat groomer near you and get the coat sorted before the first-day-of-school photos are the only thing anyone in the house has time to think about.
